Sleepy Hollow Elementary Staff Room Transformation

A Space for Respite and Connection

At Eleven11 Interiors, every project is an opportunity to create a meaningful transformation that enhances the lives of those who use the space. In August 2021, we completed a heartfelt renovation of the Staff Room at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School in Orinda, CA. This project was a labor of love, inspired by a deep appreciation for the educators who shape our communities.

Sleepy Hollow Elementary School sought to create a warm, welcoming, and functional space where teachers could gather, recharge, and connect.  After years of wear and tear, the staff room needed a fresh start—something timeless and uplifting to support educators during their busy days.

The project encompassed a full cosmetic remodel of the lounge, including:

  • Kitchen: Installation of new cabinetry, countertop slabs, and a stylish backsplash.

  • Flooring: Luxury vinyl flooring for durability and elegance.

  • Paint: A fresh, clean palette to brighten the space.

Understanding the needs of the staff was critical. We conducted a Google survey, allowing teachers to voice their priorities. The results were clear: they desired a “coffee shop vibe”—a space that felt inviting and sophisticated, akin to a spot they’d choose for a weekend lunch with friends.

Overcoming Challenges

Designing within a limited budget was both a challenge and an opportunity for creativity:

  • Funding Solutions: Funds came from multiple sources—a grant from Landed, contributions from the school district, and personal donations from Eleven11 Interiors. To stretch the budget, we worked with HomeDepot for cabinetry and shelving, honoring the district's vendor requirements.

  • Timely Delivery: A tight timeline added pressure, especially with the district's delays in securing board approvals for key elements. To ensure the space was ready for the start of the school year, we advanced funds to complete the countertop fabrication.

  • Long-Term Value: Given the likelihood that the lounge wouldn’t be updated for decades, we selected durable and timeless materials to ensure lasting beauty.

The Results

The transformation was nothing short of night and day. The staff room now exudes warmth and functionality—a stark contrast to its previous state. Key features include:

  • Daltile countertops and backsplash for a polished yet practical finish.

  • HomeDepot cabinetry and shelving, blending budget-consciousness with style.

  • Luxury vinyl flooring for a clean, durable foundation.

  • Artwork from Upstart Modern to infuse the space with creativity.

A sanctuary for educators to enjoy well-deserved moments of connection and calm.

A Personal Connection
