Mohawk

This 1935 log cabin in Southwest Michigan, a highly desirable and charming lake vacation destination, is defined by long summer days at the beach and big family gatherings. We sought to preserve its spirit of place while introducing a thoughtful, modern refresh that respected its architectural roots.

Inside, we transformed the dark varnished paneling and beams with warm white paint, creating a brighter, more inviting space that highlighted the original log construction and beach lifestyle. Furnishings and window treatments were updated to add both function and texture, while two full-size upstairs bedrooms became cheerful children’s rooms, complete with built-in bunk beds and integrated storage.

Outside, we updated the outdated brown paint with a striking blue-black and swapped the drab roof for a light gray one. The goal was to retain the appeal of the original log home while elevating its aesthetic.

This transformation balanced heritage and modernity, inspiring neighbors to adopt similar design upgrades. Even with a modest budget, the project demonstrated the dramatic impact of reimagining interiors and exteriors with thoughtful design choices, proving that paint can be a powerful tool in reinvention.
